The Rainbow Passage

When the sunlight strikes raindrops in the air, they act as a prism and form a rainbow. The rainbow is a division of white light into many beautiful colors. These take the shape of a long round arch, with its path high above, and its two ends apparently beyond the horizon. There is, according to legend, a boiling pot of gold at one end. People look, but no one ever finds it. When a man looks for something beyond his reach, his friends say he is looking for the pot of gold at the end of the rainbow.

I’m from County Mayo, which is in the West of Ireland. I’m livin’ in Dublin twenty years, but I do go up and down all the time. Apparently actually, my accent does change. My girlfriend is German and she tells me every time I talk to someone from Mayo, she can’t understand me. We usually… The joke about us is that we go, “The West. The West.” That’s the very strong thing over there. I can’t… It feels weird to kinda do it unnaturally. I don’t know. I just… Whenever I do talk to my family, instinct kicks in, and I just go. It’s something I never noticed. Was just kind of pointed out to me.

Yes, dependin’ on what you’re in. I’m actually a tour guide, so Phoenix Park, if you haven’t been in it is absolutely beautiful, especially if you get a nice day, which doesn’t happen too often, but yeah. Dublin Castle. It’s a lot of great history. The building, the architecture, isn’t that amazing, but the history behind, because it’s a city that’s over one thousand years old, so there is a lot of great stories around here. Trinity College is not a bad spot either. There’s the two cathedrals which are right beside each other. We’ve got Saint Patrick’s Cathedral and Christ Church Cathedral, which is really worth a visit.

We do drink a lot. The fightin’, not so much. This is a stereotype that’s not really true. And we don’t say, “Top of the mornin’ to you,” either. We’ve never, ever, ever once said that. I can’t thoroughly think of any other stereotypes that we have. Yeah, they’re the main two stereotypes I can think of. One of them is true, the other one isn’t really.

I am from Castlebar in County Mayo. I grew up there, and I spent eighteen years living there. And then I spent four years living in Dublin and two years in London, and then I moved to San Francisco. We’re in Dublin. We’re in Trinity College today. It’s a lovely day. It’s a bit windy. And North Dublin and South Dublin. Well, I lived in North Dublin while I went to university. And I don’t know about the difference in the accents. I’d say that the South Dublin accent is a bit more sophisticated, and a little bit more neutral. Whereas the North Dublin accent is probably a bit more acute. I’m retired. Yeah, I worked in the software business in software engineering, mostly in California. And which is the universe for technology, as well as Dublin, of course. And yeah, San Francisco’s a really nice place to live. Have you ever been there?
