African (Sub-Saharan) Accents Learning Materials

  • The Sub-Saharan African accents materials include recordings of Accent Help coach Jim Johnson guiding you through the basics of these accents along with a native speaker from Malawi demonstrating the practice words and sentences, leading you through the text. You'll also have tracks of Jim leading you through a monologue in the accent, with the native speaker demonstrating it.
  • You will also hear native speakers from over a dozen different African nations reading through the practice sentences and the practice monologue, along with hearing them in conversation. (You can see the specific information at the Audio Files tab below.)
  • There are additional recordings of native speakers from 23 African nations:  Benin, Botswana, Burkina Faso, Cameroon, Central African Republic, Congo, Cote D'ivoire, Gabon, Ghana, Kenya, Malawi, Mauritius, Nigeria, Rwanda, Senegal, Swaziland, Tanzania, Togo, Uganda, Zambia and Zimbabwe.
  • You'll have instant access to the materials online, including audio and written guides, plus a PDF "cheat sheet" for learning the accents. You'll also get transcriptions of the recordings of the native speakers.
  • Other African accents will be covered in additional Accent Help materials, including North Africa in the Arabic/Middle East materials and another download focused on South African.
  • You'll have immediate access to all of the materials on your computer, tablet, or phone.
  • You'll also get future updates for free, as you continue to have access to the materials, showing up automatically whenever new elements are uploaded!

All profits from these materials go to opportunity scholarships for actors at the University of Houston to study overseas.

Most of these Native Speaker recordings are made "in the field" so you will hear such things as birds, cars or other people in the background. A transcription of the conversations is included to help you follow along. In addition to a conversation, most speakers also read a list of words and The Rainbow Passage.
